Almost everyone has had to deal with kidney or urinary tract infections, impacted teeth with abscesses, strep throat (streptococcus bacteria), and sinus, yeast, and ear infections. What most people don’t know is that you don’t have to visit the doctor, pay a copay, and pick up a prescription for antibiotics to get rid of it. Antibiotics do way more damage than help in the end, and after continuous use over time they become ineffective as your body adapts to their ingestion. This causes you to need more and stronger versions in order to fight the infection. If use is continued beyond this point your body will become dependent on them to fight infection for it, thus rendering your immune system almost useless. This is because antibiotics do not promote immune system function they simply enter your body and kill all bacteria, whether it is good bacteria that normally live in the body and assist in normal everyday functions, or the bad bacteria that invade from our external environment and work to take over your cells for their own purposes.
A normal, strong, and healthy immune system can typically fight off most infections without any assistance. People struggle with this thought and typically freak out when they develop a fever and other symptoms of an infection. They know they have been invaded and want to destroy the invader as fast as possible. So they go get antibiotics before giving their immune system a chance to do its job.
Which has worked just fine for the Homo sapien for thousands of years, up until the early 1900s when the first antibiotic, penicillin, was developed from the penicillium mold. Up until then natural plant extracts were utilized to fight bacterial and viral infections and scientists truely believed they could find a better way to kill bodily invaders without dealing with the uncomfortable symptoms of infection. With this development plant extracts were tossed aside and forgotten, deemed useless by scientific discovery, even though they had been effective since Homo habilis first stood on two legs over 2 million years ago. Even horses know of the benefit of herbs for pain. If you observe an older horse with decaying teeth you will see it selectively chew horsetail fern, which is a great natural tooth pain reliever. This is how the first people learned about healing herbs, by observing animals. Over hundreds of thousands of years they tested on themselves and developed an extensive knowledge of plant based remedies that was verbally passed down for thousands of generations.
So I would like to bring that knowledge back to the forefront of human health because we are only poisoning ourselves with our chemical developments. We’ve all seen the commercials for new drugs that are guaranteed to stop the problem the drug is designed for, but not without an extensive list of often debilitating side effects. The side effects are caused by the chemical compounds incompatibility with the body. Most of these drugs only go through minimal trials that only span a year or two, at the most, and often negative results are downplayed because the pharmaceutical companies themselves are funding the trials. What about 20 years from now? What happens to you after consuming these man-made chemicals for most of your life? What happens to the child in the womb when its mother is taking anti-depressants while pregnant? Most commonly heart problems and death in infancy. But what about the children that survive into adulthood after being poisoned during gestation. What health problems appear then? Are we really so concerned about feeling better now, without doing anything but taking a pill, that we would endanger the lives of our offspring and weaken future generations?
Alright, enough of voicing my opinions. I will describe the remedies I have developed to assist my own body in fighting infection. These remedies do not kill the bacteria for you they simply provide the immune system with what it needs to fight the bacteria or viruses off by itself. None of these remedies are toxic, even in high doses, and can be given to children and infants at any time.
The first and most effective, all encompassing, remedy for any infection that I have found is Usnea. In the south it is known as Old Man’s Beard, and it hangs in long yellow-green streamers from trees in shaded moist areas. I have even found it growing in the forests north of Central City here in Colorado, especially after the wet, rainy season.
You can find an antibiotic glycerite and tea blend at Mother Gaia’s Remedies.
Or you can make your own tea, syrup, and tincture below.
The easiest preparation is a simple tea. All you need is 1/2 cup of dried Usnea, 1tbsp of honey (or sugar if giving it to a child under 2 years old), and 2 cups of water. Boil the Usnea for at least a half an hour, its fibers are very tough and must be softened and broken down. Then pour the entire mass, after it has cooled, into a blender, food processor, or Magic Bullet. I love my Magic Bullet, it will even grind up dried Ginseng root, if anyone has ever tried this they know it is one of the toughest roots that can destroy almost any grinder. Grind it up the best you can and then strain out the left over fibers with a tea strainer, coffee filter, cheesecloth, or paper towel into a clean glass jar. Pour in the honey or sugar, close the lid, and shake vigorously. Store in the refrigerator for up to six weeks. For adults, take 2 tablespoons 3 times a day, for 14 days.
For children 2 and up, give 2 teaspoons twice a day for 14 days.
For infants under two, dip your finger in the honey free mixture and rub it on their gums three times a day for 7 days. Then observe them for a day or two to be sure the fever and symptoms do not return.
If the individual being treated has issues with a chronic infection like Chrohn’s Disease or Lupus they can continue to take this remedy every day and indefinitely without side effects or toxicity symptoms.
For a longer lasting remedy that can be stored for years use 1 ounce of dried Usnea; 6 ounces of Vodka, Everclear, or Grain Alcohol; 4 ounces filter water; a 12-16 ounce glass jar with tightly sealing lid; and a 1 or 2 ounce colored glass dropper bottle. Place the Usnea in the jar and cover with alcohol and water, seal the lid, and shake vigorously. Then place jar in a sunny place for 8 days until it is a dark, golden-green color, strain back into the jar and store in cool dark place for years. Pour some into the colored glass dropper bottle and give in dropper sized doses.
For adults, 2 dropperfuls 3 times a day for 14 days.
For children 2 and up, 1 dropperful 3 times a day for 14 days.
For infants under 2, a few drops on the finger rubbed on their gums 2 times a day for 7 days, and observe after treatment for returning symptoms.
NOTE: Alcohol tinctures do contain alcohol and do affect blood sugar levels. Mother Gaia recommends vegetable glycerin based tinctures called ‘glycerites’ instead. They do not raise blood sugar and do provide a simple delivery system for certain remedies. Please remember glycerites and tinctures should always be taken with a full glass of water.
I will continue this information on the next blog.
