Healthy Broccoli Slaw Salad

Ingredients:
12 ounces broccoli slaw mix
1 avocado, diced
1 plum tomato, diced
1 Tbsp rice vinegar
1 Tbsp + 1 tsp olive oil
1 tsp honey
2 Tbsp slivered almonds
1 1/2 Tbsp flaxseeds, ground
1 1/2 Tbsp hemp seeds
Black pepper
Salt

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine broccoli slaw with avocado and tomato. In a small bowl, mix vinegar, oil, and honey. Toss with broccoli slaw mixture. Top with almonds and seeds, and sprinkle with black pepper and salt to taste. Makes 4 servings.

  • Step away from the bread basket. If you’d like a roll, grab one then move it outside of your reaching distance. The same goes for chips, should you be at a Mexican restaurant. Grab a small handful and then stay away from them the rest of the night.
  • Meal modifications are key. Feel free to make special requests. Ask the waiter if they can put the sauce on the side – or to substitute veggies for the french fries. Find out if your meal can be made without butter, oil or salt…anything that could help cut down on calories. And remember: in terms of calories, grilled is usually better than fried and baked is better than braised.
  • Start out healthy. Consider ordering a light salad or soup to kick things off. This will help to fill you up before you dive into the big meal. You also might want to split an entrée with your significant other.
  • Practice portion control. Remember that restaurant sizes are often larger than normal. Consider eating half of your meal and putting the rest in a doggie bag.
  • Avoid all the bells and whistles. Don’t add a bunch of extras to your meal. When it comes to a salad, avoid topping it off with buttery croutons, grated cheese, bacon and dollops of high-fat dressing. The same goes with a burger, baked potato and other entrees.

Silver Sneakers Flex

Classes held on Wednesdays at Noon at the Residences at Panorama Pointe in the Second Floor Community Room (Residents only)
FLEX classes are small, welcoming and led by enthusiastic instructors. Instructors even include their personal contact info in the class locator so students can really get to know them. And of course our FLEX instructors are all certified.

BEYOND THE GYM
One of the hottest trends in fitness is taking workouts beyond the gym. SilverSneakers FLEX® celebrates this trend with group classes offered outside of traditional gym locations. FLEX classes may be held at recreation centers, retirement communities, pools, parks and other local venues.

All of the classes are conducted by certified instructors and, so far, more than 70 types of classes are included in SilverSneakers FLEX. They range from tai chi to boot camp and Latin dance to yoga. Class locations and types are always expanding and we love getting your ideas for new ones. The possibilities are nearly endless. Getting fit and having fun in your neighborhood: What's not to like?

Dancing Gaia: The Nature of Movement & Meditation

Jennifer is an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor and Silver Sneakers Flex instructor and has been instructing group fitness classes for over four years.
Each class begins with deep breathing, energy building, and gentle stretching warm-ups. Class continues with a unique blend of Tai Chi, Yoga, Qigong, and Tae Kwon Do style movements. Then we finish each class with a slow and gentle cool down and seated hand posture practice.
